Archaeological investigations in South Khorasan indicate a widespread presence of grooved pottery in Parthian-period sites. The present study aims to provide a preliminary assessment of the material characteristics and technological aspects of the production of these ceramics, adopting an interdisci-plinary approach. To this end, six sherds were selected from five sites (Tepe Chahardeh Surak, Kalateh Shahpuri, Qaleh-e Kamar Zadnebeh, Anbazposhteh Hajjabad, and Tepe Kureh Mohammadabad) based on criteria such as manufacturing quality, type of decoration, and minimal post-depositional alteration, and were analysed using thin-section petrography, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS).Petrographic observations reveal the presence of quartz, feldspar, mica and lithic fragments of sedimentary, igne-ous and metamorphic origin within the ceramic fabric, showing a general correspondence with the composition of nearby alluvial sediments. XRD data confirm quartz and plagioclase feldspars as the dominant crystalline phases in all samples. Moreover, the absence of high-temperature marker phases suggests that firing temperatures probably did not exceed the threshold of major mineralogical transformations. SEM-EDS results, used as complementary semi-quantitative data, are broadly consistent with the petrographic and XRD findings. Overall, this research represents the first sys-tematic laboratory-based study of grooved pottery from South Khorasan and provides a scientific basis for future, more detailed archaeometric investigations.
