در تبیین باستان‏شناسی عصر مفرغ شمال غرب فلات ایران ظهور سفال‏های دست ساز خاکستری-سیاه در گونه‏های مختلف آن نماینده‏ی حضور فرهنگ تازه‏ وارد موسوم به کورا-ارس است. از طرف دیگر، سنت سفالی ارومیه متعلق به مفرغ پایانی، بعد از افول سنّت فرهنگی مفرغ قدیم یا کورا-ارس، بازگشت سنّت‏های سفالگری به نوع سفال‏های نخودی منقوش است. در پژوهش حاضر، نمونه سفال های خاکستری-سیاه دورۀ مفرغ قدیم سنت کورا-ارس و سفال-های نخودی-منقوش دورۀ مفرغ پایانی سنّت ارومیه، مورد مطالعه قرار گرفت؛ این نمونه ها در بررسی سطح الارضی محوطه ی کؤل تپه ی شهرستان عجب شیر جمع ‏آوری شده بودند. با مطالعه ی ماتریکس این تعداد نمونه، به بررسی وجوه مشترک موجود در ساختار سفال سبک کورا-ارس و سفال سبک ارومیه، با بهره گیری از روش پتروگرافی و مشاهده ی مقاطع نازک با میکروسکوپ پلاریزان و نیز استفاده از روش‏های XRD و FT-IR، پرداخته شده است. در این راستا، تلاش شد از طریق شناسایی فناوری ساخت سفال و ترکیب مواد تشکیل‏دهنده و سپس مراجعه به اطلاعات منابع زمین-شناسی منطقه مورد استفاده، مشخص گردد که این سنّت‏های سفالی بومی هستند یا غیربومی. با توجه به این که در توالی لایه‏های کؤل تپه  ی عجب شیر، هم آثار مفرغ قدیم و هم آثار مفرغ جدید وجود دارد، به نظر می رسد این محوطه محل مناسبی برای کنکاش در مسئله‏ی گسستگی سنّت‏های فناورانه سفالگری و نیز بررسی موضوع بومی یا مهاجر بودن سبک سفال ارومیه، به روش باستان سنجی است. نتایج مشاهدات میکروسکوپی مقاطع نازک و آنالیز XRD و FT-IR نمونه ‏ها و تطبیق این نتایج با مقیاس ‏های کانی‏ نگاری موجود از منطقه نشان داد که هر دو مجموعۀ سفال کورا-ارس و سفال سبک ارومیه به دست آمده از کؤل تپه ی عجب شیر، منشأ یکسانی دارند و لذا مربوط به خود منطقه و تولید محلی هستند.
