Abstract:   (984 Views)
Mud-brick, as one of the oldest man-made works, has been the main material of many historical buildings in Iran since the distant millennia until now. Studying the characteristics of historical mud-brick is considered important and necessary both for documenting and recording information, which is one of the first measures to protect cultural remains, and for creating a standard for comparing modern adobe. The need to protect and restore mud-brick structures doubles the need to investigate and recognize these historical materials and measure their behavioral characteristics. As any kind of intervention in historical buildings requires a relative knowledge of its constituent materials. This research aims to analyze the factors affecting the mechanical resistance of historical mud-bricks of Yazd region by examining the structure of the soil and tries to find an answer to this question in the form of inductive reasoning based on a combination of field, experimental, and laboratory methods, What is the relationship between the mechanical resistance and the characteristics of the soil forming the historical mud-brick of Yazd region? And the diversity of the soil of each region has created what features in the structure of historical mud-brick ? The results show that mud-brick with the predominance of fine-grained soil and the right amount of clay materials have better mechanical resistance than soil with the predominance of coarse-grained particles. Also, the size and shape of the particles, both on a microscopic and macroscopic scale, and the proportion between fine and coarse particles, are factors that affect the porosity and density of the mud-brick structure, which has a direct effect on the mechanical behavior and resistance to water absorption.
