روش رادار نفوذی به زمین (GPR) یک روش ژئوفیزیکی غیر مخرب است که قادر به آشکارسازی انواع ناهمگنی های زیرسطحی و نیز شناسایی انواع اهداف مدفون در اعماق کم است. در پژوهش حاضر مدل سازی پیشرو و وارون داده های GPR با هدف کاربرد در زمینه باستان شناسی، انجام شده است. منطقه مورد مطالعه، منطقه باستانی تپه حصار دامغان است که در این منطقه با هدف بررسی های باستان شناسی زیرسطحی، تعدادی پروفیل GPR با استفاده از یک سامانه GPR مجهز به آنتن های پوشش دار با فرکانس مرکزی 250 مگاهرتز، برداشت شده است. برای دست یابی به هدف، نگاشت راداری نهایی مطلوب داده های واقعی GPR منطبق بر یکی از پروفیل های برداشت در این منطقه، با اعمال مراحل پردازشی مختلف مانند تصحیح اشباع سیگنال، فیلترهای میان‌گذر، کنترل بهره خودکار و بردارنده زمینه بر روی ‌داده‌های خام، با استفاده از نرم افزار Reflexw آماده سازی شد. سپس پاسخ GPR مدل مصنوعی متناظر با نگاشت راداری منطبق بر این پروفیل، به  روش تفاضل محدود حوزه زمان (FDTD) دوبعدی، شبیه سازی شد. در ادامه برای اعتبارسنجی تعبیر و تفسیر برداشت های GPR واقعی به منظور آشکارسازی و شناسایی اهداف مدفون، از روش مدل سازی وارون با حل یک مسأله بهینه سازی، استفاده شد. نتایج این پژوهش بر اساس بررسی میزان تطابق نگاشت راداری داده های واقعی GPR با پاسخ GPR مدل مصنوعی تولید شده متناظر با آن، ضمن تأیید درستی تفسیر زیرسطحی انجام شده در منطقه باستانی تپه حصار دامغان، قابلیت کاربرد این روش را در زمینه بررسی های باستان شناسی نشان می دهد.
