کاغذهای تاریخی بیانگر هویت و ارزش های ملی، مذهبی، هنری و تاریخی هر  است. شناخت عوامل سازنده کاغذ و تعیین نوع کاغذ از نظر الیاف، آهار و دیگر مواد به‌کاررفته می تواند به شناخت فرهنگ های گذشته، نگرش های پیشین و تطور فنون مرتبط کمک شایانی نماید. با این وجود برخی نسخ خطی وجود دارند که تاریخ کتابت آن ها هنوز مشخص نیست و این امر موجب می‌گردد از ارزش استنادی آن‌ها به دلیل عدم آگاهی از هویت تاریخی آن ها کاسته شود. با استفاده از روش‌های تجزیه کیفی، کمی و شناسایی مواد تشکیل‌دهنده کاغذهای نسخ خطی می‌توان ساختار و درنتیجه زمان احتمالی تهیه کاغذ و یا زمان استفاده از آن به‌عنوان یک اثر فرهنگی را شناسایی نمود. در این پژوهش، امکان تعیین قدمت چهار نسخه خطی بدون تاریخ کتابت معلوم از طریق شناسایی مواد کاغذ نظیر نوع، ویژگی های الیاف، آهار مصرفی و مقایسه آن‌ها با چهار نمونه با تاریخ مکتوب دوره صفویه به دلیل در دسترس بودن نسخ این دوره مورد مطالعه قرار گرفت. در صورت مثبت بودن این راهکار می توان در آینده با دوره های دیگر مقایسه نمود. بدین منظور از روش های مختلف نظیر شناسایی با معرف های رنگی، مشاهدات میکروسکوپ نوری، آنالیز طیف‌سنجی مادون‌قرمز تبدیل فوریه (FTIR)، آنالیز گرماسنجی روبشی تفاضلی (DSC) و آنالیز وزن سنجی حرارتی (TGA) استفاده شد. با استفاده از هرکدام از روش های آنالیز اطلاعات ویژه ای در خصوص ساختار فیزیکی، شیمیایی، شکل ظاهری و جنس نمونه های کاغذ به دست آمد. نتایج آزمون شناسایی الیاف شامل روش های میکروسکوپ نوری و معرف های رنگی حاکی از آن است که در ساخت همه نمونه ها (به غیر از یک نمونه معلوم که از کنف ساخته شده است) الیاف کتان بکار رفته است. نتایج طیف‌سنجی مادون‌قرمز نشان‌دهنده وجود سلولز، همی سلولز و فقدان لیگنین در تمامی نمونه ها بود. همچنین آهار استفاده شده در ساخت کاغذ از نوع پلی ساکاریدی (نشاسته) تشخیص داده شد. نتایج آنالیز وزن سنجی حرارتی و گرماسنجی روبشی تفاضلی نشان داد، هر نمونه بسته به تاریخچه حرارتی و شیمیایی، پایداری و رفتار حرارتی متفاوت و مخصوص به خود دارد. همچنین مقاومت حرارتی همی سلولز نسبت به سلولز کمتر بود. بطورکلی نتایج این مطالعه نشان داد، بررسی قدمت نمونه های بدون تاریخ، از طریق آنالیزهای حرارتی با بررسی مواد خام و مواد اولیه کاغذها امکان‌پذیر است و ترکیب این داده ها با نتایج سایر آزمون ها و یکسان بودن مواد اولیه (ترکیب و اجزای آن) تائید می‌کند که کاغذهای بدون تاریخ مربوط به دوران صفویه هستند.
