در این مقاله نتایج مربوط به شناسایی لایه تدارکاتی و رنگدانه‌های به‌کاررفته در نقاشی‏های دیواری باغ و عمارت تاریخی رحیم‌آباد بیرجند ارائه شده است. بیرجند از مهم‌ترین شهرهای راهبردی حکومتی در دوره ی قاجار و یکی از لنگرگاه‌های مهم شعبه‌ای از جاده تاریخی ابریشم است که هند را به اروپا ارتباط می داده است، به همین دلیل آثار زیادی از این دوره به‌خصوص باغ های تاریخی در بیرجند به‌جای مانده است که یکی از آن ها باغ و عمارت تاریخی رحیم‌آباد است. تزیینات معماری کوشک باغ رحیم‌آباد آینه‌کاری، گچ‏بری و نقاشی دیواری است. با توجه به تنوع تزئینات معماری و تعدد دوره‌های ساخت‌وساز در عمارت رحیم‌آباد شناخت رنگدانه‌های به‌کاررفته در دیوارنگاره‌های این اثر تاریخی تأثیر مهمی در شناخت و دوره بندی (کرونولوژی) آن دارد. در این مقاله از روش‌های دستگاهی مثل SEM-EDX ،FTIR ،PLM ،XRD و XRF پرتابل برای شناسایی عنصری و ترکیبی مواد تشکیل‌دهنده رنگ‌ها و بستر نقاشی‏ها استفاده شده است. درواقع، تجزیه و تحلیل فیزیکی و شیمیایی، اطلاعات مفیدی از طیف رنگدانه‌های موجود در یک منطقه و شناخت تکنیک های آماده سازی رنگ و کاربرد آن ارائه می دهد. طبق نتایج به‌دست‌آمده، برای لایه بستر از مخلوط کلسیم سولفات (گچ) و کلسیم کربنات (گل‌سفید)، برای رنگ قرمز از قرمز سرب یا سرنج، برای رنگ سبز از مخلوط مالاکیت و آبی پروس، برای رنگ آبی از لاجورد به همراه ترکیبات آهن و مس و برای رنگ طلایی از مخلوط دو فلز مس و روی استفاده شده است. روغن به‌عنوان لایه ی بوم کننده در زیر لایه رنگ استفاده شده است. وجود روغن علاوه بر لایه تدارکاتی در نقاشی‏ها نیز وجود دارد که نشان دهنده استفاده از آن به‌عنوان بست رنگ یا ورنی در این نقاشی است. مواد مورد استفاده در این نقاشی از مواد متداول در دوره قاجار هستند و مواد شناسایی شده هیچ مغایرتی با دوره تاریخی اثر ندارند. یکی از نکات قابل توجه در مواد بکار رفته در این نقاشی کاربرد مخلوط رنگدانه‌ها برای ایجاد رنگ‌هایی با تونالیته‌های متفاوت است. نکته دیگر استفاده از رنگدانه‌های وارداتی چون آبی پروس در کنار سایر رنگدانه‌های سنتی آن دوران است. همچنین بررسی میکروسکوپی رنگ طلایی نشان‌دهنده‌ی وجود کالکوپیریت در آن است. وجود این ترکیب به دلیل خوردگی فلز مس در رنگ طلایی است و معمولاً در رنگ‌های طلایی حاصل از آلیاژ دو فلز مس و روی با ایجاد رنگ سبز در سطح رنگ طلایی نمایان می شود.
