Chemical-Mineralogical Analyses of Exquisite Pottery of Life Cycle from Prehistoric Cemetery of Keshik in Sistan and Baluchistan, SE IRAN

Accidental discovery of Keshik in Nikshahr city  as a prehistoric site  in Sistan and Baluchistan Province , SE IRAN revealed a third millennium BC. Bronze Age cemetery which contains noteworthy artifacts like metals, pottery and etc. Among these findings a very special pottery jar was found that with regard to motifs and design on the exterior surface it would require more detailed scientific studies and analyses. According to decoration motifs , this pottery called Life Cycle Jar. prepared for detailed chemistry and mineralogy analyses to address issues such as geological source, manufacturing techniques, firing and kiln conditions, identifying local or imported wares as well as identifying the pigments used to create motifs. The major  phase and  compositions of the jar body and  also pigments were determined using XRPD, SEM-EDX and OPM techniques. The results indicate that the ceramic has alluvial river soils’ origin and most probably were manufactured from local clays in Keshik River. It is also clear that in manufacturing of pottery, there is not any variety in type of minerals. According to carbon peaks and under fired gray core of pottery section it can be proved the oxidation-reduction cycle process. Analyses also showed that the pigments used as decorative motifs on the exterior surface of jar include Iron and Manganese elements. These two elements are used because of long-term sustainability and mineral base and in combination with each other, create the tone of brown to black colors.
